The dampness of the ground spread through Laura’s bare feet. As she sank to her knees the cold reached her torso. Tearless eyes watched her pale hands as they covered autumn leaves on mist-covered grass.

She gripped nature’s rejects. The edges of the broken, brittle leaves bit into her palms. Rocking back onto her haunches, she opened her hands and stared at bronzed pieces of spring glory now shattered beyond repair.

Like my heart

Laura tossed the pieces into the air. Caught by a puff of winter’s breath, they blew away.
