Featured Poet ~ SS 2018
After a 31 year career in cardiac ultrasound Ann retired in 2015 and is taking poetry writing classes at Hugo House in Seattle, Wa. Her poem, Elegy for my Father, was published by the online journal Algebra of Owls in August 2016. A haiku, Autumn Home, was published by 50 Haikus in October 2016. A third poem, Joyride, was published in The Remembered Arts Journal, Winter Edition.
Cantaloupe
With a push and twist, the metal
scoop bites into ripe cantaloupe
flesh. I drop perfect deep yellow balls
into the two bowls in front of Dad.
Grabbing the butcher knife,
I whack a chunk off the watermelon,
add that red dripping fruit
to both servings. Dad pours
whip cream over his.
I carry bowls, spoons and napkins
out to his deck. We sit side by side,
look at the cul-de-sac,
our cars, his plastic tulips,
the straight lines on his tiny lawn,
the evening sky.
We argue. For once it’s
not about his drinking,
it’s not about my
absence from his life.
